2023 Reusability Rules Mean Business Opportunities in Germany

October 2022

Changes to the law at the start of the New Year, providers of to-go food – caterers, delivery services and restaurants – will be required to offer reusable packages. It’s one of many rules intended to cut down on plastic and other harmful waste. But the regulations also open up a new niche for international companies to do business in Germany.

Case in point Kooky. The Swiss start-up has devised an interactive reusable and recyclable drinking cup with a QR code. Users can scan the cup before throwing it in a sensor-equipped return box, which automatically refunds deposits.

The cups are made of recyclable materials and can be washed hundreds of times.

In April, Kooky received EUR six million to expand operations to Germany. Its cup refund system is now being rolled out there. Other companies like Munich start-up Recup are pursuing similar ideas.
