Assay ready cells are cells that have been cryopreserved at a highly functional state and can be used instantly after thawing, making them a valuable tool in drug research. But many questioned their usefulness. Hamburg company acCELLerate wasn’t deterred.
“People basically said that Assay Ready cells could not be used in this procedure,” says acCELLerate Managing Director Oliver Wehmeier. “But we said: ‘We’ll take a closer look’ and we believed in it. The IFB Hamburg (bank) helped us take risks and eventually brought the project to fruition.”
The company says that new Assay Ready kits in Europe and the United States are going well. The firm now has 17 employees and says it plans to expand its operations to include very sensitive cells that can be used to predict allergic reactions to substances. The method replaces animal experiments originally done on rabbits.
