Booming German Shipbuilding

November, 2018

According to a recent survey, the number of people employed in the German shipbuilding sector has risen by 7.3 percent over the previous year, to reach almost 17,000, which is the highest level since 2009.

The greatest increases were for operations building passenger ships, and the state with the greatest gains was Mecklenburg-Vorpommern.

Several major sector companies currently have full order books for several years to come, and they expect to get an additional boost from retrofitting work as a result of the International Maritime Organization’s new regulations regarding sulfur emissions, which will enter into effect in 2020.
