Saxony-Anhalt’s status as a digital hotspot – especially in the cutting-edge fields of big data, cloud computing and IT security – is growing fast. The Telekom subsidiary T-Systems is investing EUR 160 million to build Biere 2, another cloud data center in Biere, near the city of Magdeburg, which will house 30,000 servers. When completed in fall 2018, T-Systems is expected to become one of the leading service providers in the European cloud market. In 2017, Saxony-Anhalt was home to some 2,000 companies in the ICT sector, generating more than EUR 2 billion in revenue and employing roughly 16,000 people – many from the state’s highly developed university and research landscape. Most of these companies focus on IT services and software, particularly for automotive suppliers, energy providers and mechanical engineers. Although most are medium-sized, there are also some global players, such as IMB and Dell.
