“Factory 56:” the Future of Car Production

June, 2018

Mercedes-Benz laid the foundation stone earlier this year in Sindelfingen (Baden-Württemberg) for its ultra-modern “Factory 56,” which it claims will “define a new way of building cars.” The factory will initially manufacture self-driving taxis (so-called “robotaxis”), traditional luxury models, and its flagship fully-electric EQ series. The focus is on “digital, flexible, green”: For example, workers will use augmented reality tools and virtual assembly solutions as well as work alongside so-called collaborative robots (co-bots). What’s more, CO2 emissions will be massively reduced, such as by having a photovoltaic system on the roof. The state-of-the-art factory is expected to open in 2020 and employ approximately 1,000 people.
