Great Games

August 2019

The 2019 Game of the Year Award for German language board and card games has gone to “Just One” by Ludovic Roudy und Bruno Sautter. It’s been described as a “light-hearted party game for 3 to 7 players from age 8 and older.”

The Connoisseurs Prize went to “Flügelschlag” (Wingbeat), a board game about, of all things, ornithology and is aimed at older players. “Tal der Wikinger” (Valley of the Vikings”) was named best children’s game.

At the award ceremony, German State Culture Minister Monika Grütters stressed the cultural importance of games.

“In times of increasing digitalization, the growing demand for board and card games in Germany is a very gratifying signal,” Grütters said.

The Federal Office of Statistics estimates the annual sales of games in Germany to be around a half-billion euros.
