German Gaming Market Approached EUR 10 Billion

April 2022

2021 was a very good year for the gaming sector in Germany. The German Games Industry Association (game) has calculated that revenue software, online fees and hardware shot up 17 percent last year over already records levels in 2020. Total turnover was EUR 9.8 billion.

“The people who first took up playing during the lockdowns are still enjoying it,” said game Managing Director Felix Falk. “No matter whether they are using games consoles or gaming PCs, Germany’s video game players once again invested considerable sums in their equipment to ensure that they would be able to continue enjoying their games in the best possible quality in the future. In fact, demand in some cases exceeded supply, meaning that it would have been possible to increase sales revenue by even more.”

Game enthusiasts were often forced to wait in 2021 to make purchases because of bottlenecks in computer chip supplies. There were slight declines in cloud and online gaming services, but a dramatic rise in subscription gaming more than compensated for those downturns.
