The 2021 ranking of Germany`s smartest cities, compiled every year by digital industry association bitkom, features a familiar name at the summit and three new entries in the top ten. Last year’s victor, Hamburg clearly led the way ahead of Cologne, Karlsruhe, Munich and Darmstadt. The northern Germans excelled in the categories energy and the environment, IT and communication, mobility, and society.
“Hamburg has increased its dominance from the past year and booked the top ranking for the first time in four of our five categories,” said bitkom President Achim Berg. “The city more than deserved its overall first place.”
There were three newcomers in the top ten. Dresden in eastern Germany shot up 18 places to number six, edging out seventh-placed Bochum in Germany’s western industrial heartland, which rose 11 spots. Freiburg in southwestern German came in tenth after jumping five spots. Stuttgart and Berlin rounded out the top ten in eighth and ninth respectively.
