Milestone on the Path to a Green Future
Germany has reached yet another milestone on its path to a green future powered by renewable energy.
According to the German Association of Energy and Water Industries (BDEW), solar, wind, hydro and biomass generated 118 billion kWh of electricity in the first half of 2018.
For the first time ever, this was more than lignite- and hard coal-fired power plants, 10 percent more than the prior-year figure for this period, and 36.3 percent of all the electricity generated (2017: 32.5 percent).
As a result, the share of coal in the electricity mixed dropped from 38.5 to 35.1 percent, and of natural gas from 13.5 to 12.3 percent.
