New German Federal Cybersecurity Agency
Minister of the Interior, Building and Community Horst Seehofer and Minister of Defense Ursula von der Leyen have announced that Germany will be creating a completely new federal authority by 2023.
The Agency for Innovation in Cybersecurity will support key cybersecurity technologies with high potential for innovation and will be in charge of coordinating the entire research process (from initial idea to final product) and investing in emerging cybersecurity technologies. Among its key research areas could be artificial intelligence and neural networks.
Establishing the agency will reportedly involve an investment volume of EUR 200 million and create at least 100 new jobs. Although the exact location of the agency has not been determined, it will be in the Leipzig/Halle region. Among the reasons for choosing this location was its scientific landscape. In response to the decision, the Leipzig University of Applied Sciences (HTWK Leipzig) reportedly plans to launch a new master’s program in cybersecurity.
