Luxembourgish chemicals company Orion Engineered Carbons is planning to expand its presence in Cologne.
Orion has been active in the western German city since 1931. At present, some 400 employees produce 160,000 tons of “carbon black” a year there. Carbon black is used as a reinforcing filler in tires and other rubber products as well as a color pigment in plastics, paints and inks.
The expansion reflects the growing market for water and solvent coatings.
“Increasing our capacity in Cologne is a further step in our rapid reorientation of Orion’s portfolio around high-quality carbon-particulate matter for special, technical rubber applications,” said Orion chairman Corning Painter.
Orion has 14 production locations and employs more than 1,460 employees around the world. The chemical sector in the state of North Rhine-Westphalia, where Cologne is located, does 43 billion euros of turnover annually.
