Online retail is booming, with some 3.65 billion packages being sent in Germany in 2019 and that figure likely to rise considerably because of the coronavirus pandemic. This has led to a veritable deluge of packaging waste – a problem German French start-up LivingPackets aims to solve with something called, simply, The Box.
The company says that this plastic packaging system can be reused up to a thousand times. It also protects contents so that no additional cushioning material is needed.
The packaging has a volume of 32 liters or enough room for two shoeboxes, which would cover the majority of online retail requirements. The packages, which are set go on the market late this year, will cost between one and two euros. They’re even equipped with sensors so that customers can track the delivery status of the items they ordered.
