Rocket Factory Wins German Microlauncher Competition
New space start-up Rocket Factory has been awarded joint first place in a two-year, EUR 25 million microlauncher competition held by the German Space Agency (DLR). The young company from the Bavarian city of Augsburg joins Munich’s Isar Aerospace as the competitions second winner – both firms will receive EUR 11 million in funding.
“Both companies made great progress last year in the development of their small carrier rockets and presented very promising concepts,” German Aerospace Coordinator Anna Christmann said at the award ceremony. “In this way we’ll create the basis for affordable, commercial access to space. Only with the tandem of competition and a dynamic start-up community, we will secure Europe’s future access to orbits around the earth.
The winners were selected by a seven-member jury of experts. HyImpulse Technologies from Neuenstadt am Kocher placed third in the competition. All the companies were praised for their liquid propellant engine innovations.
