Tesla Plans Expansion of German Gigafactory
March 2023
American electric carmaker Tesla wants to double the capacity of its production facility in Grünheide near the German capital Berlin. The company has applied for construction permits at the gigafactory with the aim of enabling it to produce up to one million vehicles a year.
The current capacity at the facility is 500,000, although that mark has not yet been reached. Currently, some 4000 vehicles per week roll off assembly lines.
The gigafactory has been up and running since March 2022. 10,000 people currently work there, although there are plans to expand the work force to 12,000.
Jörg Steinbach, the minister of economics in the regional state of Brandenburg where Grünheide is located welcomed the expansion plans. No initial word was given about when construction could start.
