“Too Good for the Bin”
Germany’s Federal Government recently set itself the ambitious goal of reducing the annual food waste of consumers and retailers by half by 2030. In concrete figures, this will lower the amount of useable food that is thrown out from 7 million to 3.5 million metric tons. Since 2012, the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture has run a “Zu gut für die Tonne” (“Too Good for the Bin”) campaign to help private consumers reduce the amount of food waste they produce, which is estimated to account for some two-thirds of all food waste. The government’s goal is in line with one of the Sustainable Development Goals of the United Nations.
