PICNIC – rapid expansion all over NRW
With the online supermarket PICNIC customers can order food from home without delivery charges. Founded only in 2015, the Dutch start-up already serves approximately 200,000 households in the Netherlands. PICNIC pursues a sustainable and eco-friendly strategy: from cooperation with regional supermarkets, bakeries or farms to a fleet of specially developed electric vans delivering the food. The routes of the vans are calculated by algorithms and optimized daily.
For their first international expansion step, the company chose to come to North Rhine-Westphalia. Here, PICNIC today already operates ten hubs with more than 600 employees in Bochum, Duisburg, Düsseldorf/Neuss, Essen, Gelsenkirchen, Krefeld, Langenfeld, Moers, Mönchengladbach, and Viersen. The company is growing rapidly: the latest six delivery hubs started operations only between July and October 2019, emphasizing PICNIC’s immense growth activities in North Rhine-Westphalia. Today, the delivery service already reaches more than 60,000 customers and plans to launch further delivery hubs at additional locations.
