Dynamic Development of the Business Location: PSA / Opel and Amazon Invest in Kaiserslautern
Thanks to new settlements, business models and processes, the Kaiserslautern economic region is developing dynamically. The two largest projects in the coming years: the commissioning of battery cell production for electric cars by Opel / PSA and the establishment of a logistics center for Amazon.
Probably the largest gigafactory in Germany is planned on the Opel site in Kaiserslautern: from 2025, drive batteries for electric cars are to be produced at the site, with which up to 500,000 vehicles can be equipped annually in the final construction stage. By 2030, around 48 gigawatt hours should be covered for up to one million electric cars. In order to realize this project, the Opel parent company PSA founded the joint venture ACC together with the energy company Total. With funding from the German and French state governments, around five billion euros are to flow into the project and up to 2,000 new jobs will be created at the site.

The global logistics group Amazon already operates around 15 large logistics centers across Germany, and another one is to be built and put into operation in Kaiserslautern by 2023: from mid-2021, the construction of a 48,000 square meter logistics center on the site of the former Opel forest in the Einsiedlerhof district of 18 hectares begin. Compared to the logistics center in Frankenthal, an investment of 100 million euros can be expected. According to Amazon, at least 1,000 new jobs will be created.
